Principal Applied Scientist, Alexa Conversational Assistants Services

Job Description

The Alexa Conversational Assistants Services (CAS) organization at Amazon is seeking a Principal Applied Scientist with expertise in Natural Language Processing, Machine/Deep Learning, and Large Language Models (LLMs). This role involves working with a team of applied and research scientists to enhance existing features and explore new possibilities with LLM empowerment. You will own high visibility programs with broad impact and interact with a cross-functional team of science, product, and engineering leaders.

Key Responsibilities

• Define key research directions and adopt or invent new machine learning techniques.
• Conduct rigorous experiments, publish results, and ensure research is translated into practice.
• Develop long-term strategies, persuade teams to adopt those strategies, propose goals, and deliver on them.
• Participate in organizational planning, hiring, mentorship, and leadership development.
• Serve as a key scientific resource in full-cycle development (conception, design, implementation, testing to documentation, delivery, and maintenance).

Basic Qualifications

• PhD with specialization in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, machine learning, or computational cognitive science.
• 10+ years of combined academic and research experience.
• Functional thought leader, sought after for key tech decisions.
• Experience developing software in traditional programming languages (C++, Java, etc.).
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong software development skills.
• Experience working effectively with science, data processing, and software engineering teams.
• Proven track record of innovation in creating novel algorithms and advancing the state of the art.
• Strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences.

Compensation

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
