Amazon's Conversational AI Modeling and Learning (CAMEL) team, part of the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organization, is on a mission to create a best-in-class Conversational AI. Our goal is to develop superior Large Language Models (LLM) solutions and services that enhance the capabilities of our models, enabling the use of thousands of APIs and external knowledge sources to provide the best experience for millions of customers and endpoints.

We are seeking a passionate, talented, and resourceful science leader in the fields of LLM, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Recommender Systems, and Information Retrieval. The successful candidate will invent and build scalable solutions for state-of-the-art context-aware conversational AI. You will have a solid technical background and extensive experience in leading projects and technical teams. Experience in developing natural language processing systems, particularly LLM-based systems for industry applications, is essential. You should enjoy operating in highly dynamic and ambiguous environments and be self-motivated to tackle challenging problems to deliver customer impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a team of scientists to fine-tune and evaluate LLMs to improve instruction-following capabilities, align human preferences with RLHF, and enhance conversation responses with RAG techniques.
• Use management, research, and production experience to develop the team, communicate direction, and achieve results in a fast-paced environment.
• Influence the overall LLM strategy by helping define product features, drive system architecture, and spearhead best practices for a quality product.
• Build a strong and coherent team with a focus on sciences and innovations in LLM technologies for conversational AI applications.
• Own strategic planning and project management for technical initiatives with the help of technical leads. Provide technical and scientific guidance to team members.
• Collaborate effectively with multiple cross-organizational teams and communicate effectively with senior management and colleagues from science, engineering, and business backgrounds.
• Support the career development of team members.

Basic Qualifications

• Master's degree in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics, or equivalent quantitative field.
• 5+ years of experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications.
• 2+ years of experience managing scientists or machine learning engineers.
• Solid technical background and familiarity with natural language processing and the latest LLM techniques.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics with specialization in machine learning, deep learning, or natural language processing.
• 3+ years of experience in building conversational AI and/or natural language processing systems.
• Experience working with LLMs for large-scale business applications is a strong plus.
• Project management experience working on cross-functional projects.
• Ability to work well with people, helping to achieve stretch goals in a highly ambiguous and fast-paced environment.
• Publications at peer-reviewed NLP/ML conferences (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, AAAI, etc.).

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $165,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $286,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
