Senior Applied Scientist - Large Language Models

Job Description

Amazon is seeking a talented Senior Applied Scientist to join our team in Sunnyvale, California. Our mission is to create best-in-class AI agents that seamlessly integrate multimodal inputs like speech, images, and video, enabling natural, empathetic, and adaptive interactions. We develop cutting-edge Large Language Models (LLMs) that leverage advanced architectures, cross-modal learning, interpretability, and responsible AI techniques to provide coherent, context-aware responses augmented by real-time knowledge retrieval.

Key Responsibilities

• Research novel algorithms and modeling techniques to develop data simulation approaches mimicking real-world interactions with a focus on the speech modality.
• Acquire and curate large, diverse datasets while ensuring privacy, creating robust evaluation metrics and test sets to comprehensively assess LLM performance.
• Integrate human-in-the-loop feedback, iterating on data selection, sampling, and enhancement techniques to improve core model performance.
• Innovate in data representation, model pre-training/fine-tuning on simulated and real-world datasets, and responsible AI practices.
• Build scalable solutions for a variety of applications, such as streaming real-time conversational experiences, including multilingual support, talking avatar interactions, customizable personalities, and conversational turn-taking.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
• PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
• Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in professional software development.
• Experience with popular deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch, MxNet, and TensorFlow.
• Experience with large-scale machine learning systems, including profiling, debugging, and understanding system performance and scalability.
• Proficient in two of the following areas: large language models, information retrieval, speech recognition, computer vision, and graph neural networks.

Compensation

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $222,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
