About The Program

The OpenAI Residency is a six-month program designed to enable exceptional engineers and researchers from diverse fields to transition into artificial intelligence. We look for candidates with excellent track records and high potential. OpenAI has long been home to many self-taught researchers and engineers, and we seek out candidates both inside and outside of traditional education and work settings. The program strives to include a diverse set of skills and backgrounds that reflect the human experience so our work can do the same.

About The Role

We are currently recruiting Resident candidates specifically to join our Model Behavior team. As a Resident with the Model Behavior Team, you will be integrated into their research team with mentorship from an experienced OpenAI Researcher. We expect the Resident to ramp up quickly over the six-month program to become full-time contributors.

The role is based in our San Francisco, California HQ. We offer a flexible work environment, encouraging Residents to come into the office at least 3 days a week. We will also provide relocation assistance as needed. We do not allow Residents to work remotely or from our satellite offices.

About The Team

The model behavior team defines the core behavior of models using alignment methods such as RLHF / RLAIF to reflect fundamental values and improve creative intelligence. We leverage this work to develop innovative human-AI interfaces and interaction paradigms in tight collaboration with product design and engineering teams. Our team produces artifacts, impacting millions of users.

As a Resident On This Team, You May:

• Design challenging evaluations related to creative intelligence.
• Develop scalable synthetic data techniques.
• Train models and run experiments to study data quality.
• Iterate on research experiments, clearly communicating insights to the team.
• Integrate core model behaviors into models that power ChatGPT.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering to bring conceptual prototypes from the research phase into production.

You Might Thrive In This Role If You:

• Are a team player – willing to do a variety of tasks that move the team forward.
• Are highly skilled in Python.
• Have familiarity with data processing and data analysis.
• Have familiarity with human and synthetic data for evaluation or model training.
• Have familiarity with Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Large Language Models and related infrastructure (e.g., PyTorch).
• Have familiarity with product development cycles.
• Bonus: Familiarity with synthetic data generation methods.
