Job Overview
As a Senior Software Engineer at Square, you will be pivotal in designing and maintaining our Payments and Refund APIs, which are crucial for both external developers and Square products. This role is a strategic asset to Square, allowing you to impact our global payments strategy significantly.
Responsibilities
- Expand and maintain our Payments and Refund APIs.
- Design and implement high-volume, low-latency, distributed transaction processing systems.
- Abstract legacy APIs into consistent, coherent service APIs for Square and our sellers.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to the team's direction.
- Participate in agile development processes, including stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
- Collaborate with product, business, and finance teams to develop and refine our global payments strategy.
- Focus on operational excellence, delivering fault-tolerant systems that enable teams to move fast without impacting customers negatively.
Qualifications
- Deep understanding and curiosity in creating highly available, scalable, low-latency systems.
- Experience leading complex projects and breaking down work into components.
- Interest in transforming the payments landscape both in the US and globally.
- Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of software development experience in Java, Go, or similar.
Preferred Skills
- Enterprise experience with JVM languages (Java, Kotlin).
- Experience designing & operating fault-tolerant, high throughput, low latency services in a microservices ecosystem.
- Experience in the payments industry.

The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
