Senior Mobile Engineer (Android)

Job Overview

Join NPR, a mission-driven multimedia organization, as a Senior Mobile Engineer specializing in Android development. You will be part of a dynamic team committed to delivering high-quality listening, reading, and viewing experiences across all platforms. This role involves working on high-performing Scrum teams to develop Android features in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with other Android Engineers to develop new product features, working closely with designers, product managers, and other stakeholders.
• Contribute to system architecture, processes, and business requirements.
• Break down statements of work into achievable goals and tickets for a given sprint.
• Maintain the existing codebase, optimizing performance, adding unit tests, and refactoring existing code as needed using a test-driven development mindset.
• Participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), from planning to development, code reviews, release, maintenance, and after-hours support.
• Evaluate and recommend new technology solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience leading and collaborating on Android feature development through deployment to production.
• Experience documenting architecture and system designs.

Work Location

This is a remote role based out of our Washington, DC office, but the employee may choose to work remotely from a location approved by NPR.

Required Skills

• Experience working on a professional development team in an Agile environment.
• Experience managing a production Android application with Google Play Console and other performance monitoring services.
• Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
• Expertise in Java and Kotlin.
• Proficiency in object-oriented and protocol-oriented programming skills.
• Experience with design patterns and software architecture, specifically concepts such as dependency injection and MVVM.
• Experience with unit testing frameworks and working with RESTful APIs.
• Experience with Git.

Bonus Skills

• Experience with media playback, ExoPlayer, Media3.
• Experience with Jetpack Compose.
• Proficiency in Room, Flow, Coroutines.
• Programming experience with iOS, Chromecast, or Alexa.

Job Type

This is a full-time, exempt position.

Compensation

The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is €124,508.51 - €132,091.08 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
