Job Description
Our team in Amazon Robotics (AR) is looking for an enthusiastic Applied Science Manager to lead and support a team of scientists in building a foundational model for robotic sensing and manipulation. The collaborative team partners with a diverse set of teams on data and models with the goal of empowering all manipulation programs that deal with millions of distinct items stored in cluttered and dense storage. To do this, we apply a broad range of machine learning techniques and leverage existing models and techniques used across Amazon. We are an interdisciplinary team with a focus on earning trust with our partner teams who we view as collaborators as well as customers. You will work to integrate these new models into existing and future robotic systems and to evaluate their use in deployed systems. Your work and insights will have immediate impact in the impact of robotics technology within Amazon and will also help define the long-term strategy for the role of AI for computer vision and learned behaviors in Amazon’s autonomous robots.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support a team of scientists in designing, training, and evaluating foundational models from a heterogeneous dataset.
- Partner with principal scientists and engineers to collaborate with other science and engineering teams across Amazon Robotics.
- Tackle and solve challenging science and business problems that balance the generalization capabilities of foundational models against the performance benefits of fine-tuning.
- Own a portfolio of pragmatic long-term investments that drive long-term benefits across Amazon Robotics.
- Develop scientists’ careers and skill sets during a period of extraordinary change in the field.
A Day in the Life
You’ll lead the science team in partnership with 2 principal scientists and an engineering team. This is a unique opportunity for someone who wants to have broad business impact, a direct impact on Amazon fulfillment costs. If you are interested in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, big data, and leading a team to build solutions, this role is for you. We’re looking for a leader who can help influence the vision and communicate and execute with their team.
Basic Qualifications
- PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field.
- Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application.
- 5+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers.
Benefits
Amazon offers a full range of benefits that support you and eligible family members, including domestic partners and their children. Benefits can vary by location, the number of regularly scheduled hours you work, length of employment, and job status such as seasonal or temporary employment. The benefits that generally apply to regular, full-time employees include:
