Senior Software Engineer (Backend) - Developer Platform Growth

Job Description

Join Block as a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) on the Developer Platform Growth team. In this role, you will be instrumental in building and maturing our services to be responsive and reliable, working closely with partner teams to maximize the value of the developer platform. You will contribute to roadmap and strategy decisions for key developer and merchant capabilities, playing a critical role in achieving our industry-leading growth goals.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers to design, build, and iterate on world-class product experiences via microservices, APIs, and web apps.
• Design, implement, maintain, and own developer-facing surfaces that make it easier for external developers to build reliable products for Square merchants.
• Participate in the ongoing design and architecture of our evolving developer platform and services.
• Have a voice in the direction of our product, roadmap, and priorities, helping define product scope, requirements, and design.
• Be responsible for the entirety of your features, including API design, implementation, automated testing, and rollout.
• Hold yourself and your teammates accountable to the standards of engineering and ethics that enable Square to safely move billions of dollars in payments and allow our customers to trust us with their sensitive data.
• Empower a team of engineers by mentoring individuals, cultivating pragmatic engineering decision-making, and leveraging your technical expertise to constantly raise the quality of design decisions and implementation.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant software development experience.
• Strong ownership and execution skills, with a pragmatic focus on ROI, to deliver remarkable solutions to our merchants.
• Proficiency in at least one server-side language and an enthusiasm to learn others.
• Ability to adapt to different stages of product development, from building scrappy code to sustainable systems.
• Demonstrated ability to create readable, pragmatic code.
• Ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers of varying experience levels.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with designers, product managers, data scientists, marketing, and business development.

• Zone A: $198,000—$297,000 USD
• Zone B: $188,100—$282,100 USD
• Zone C: $178,200—$267,400 USD
• Zone D: $168,300—$252,500 USD

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area.
