Senior Manager, Applied Science - Outbound Communications

Job Description

Amazon's Outbound Communications team is seeking a Senior Manager of Applied Science to lead our Science and Analytics team. This role is pivotal in driving the vision for our outbound communication strategies, ensuring that our customers receive timely and relevant notifications across various channels such as email, mobile, and SMS. The goal is to enhance customer awareness and discovery of Amazon’s products and services.

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership and Vision: Set the science and analytics vision for Outbound Communications. Apply business judgment to identify opportunities and develop science strategies.
• Collaboration: Work collaboratively with engineering and business partners to build algorithms and models for message selection, content personalization, and message targeting.
• Team Management: Hire and grow a talented team of science and analytics leaders.
• Communication: Influence, collaborate, and communicate effectively with other engineering, science, and business leaders. Communicate scientific solutions and insights effectively to a non-scientific audience.
• Quality Assurance: Develop metrics and mechanisms to audit channel and program quality and develop best practices.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of exceptional hands-on experience in building quantitative solutions.
• 5+ years of experience managing teams of machine learning, data science professionals, and/or engineers.
• 3+ years of experience developing algorithms or building machine learning models for business applications.
• PhD or MS degree in Engineering, Technology, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative/engineering field.
• Excellent communication skills and management and leadership experience in applying quantitative solutions.
• Prototyping skills (e.g., R/Python).

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building machine learning and analytic applications.
• Experience in reinforcement learning and natural language processing.
• PhD and 7+ years of relevant industry or academic research experience.
• Advanced knowledge of big data analytics technology.
• Skills with Java, C++ (or other high-level programming language) as well as R, MATLAB, Python (or similar scripting language).

Compensation

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $175,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $340,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
