Join Astranis as a Communications/DSP Engineer Intern
Astranis is on a mission to bridge the digital divide by connecting the four billion people worldwide who currently lack internet access. We're doing this by building the next generation of smaller, more cost-effective spacecraft to bring the world online.
About the Role
As a Communications/DSP Engineer Intern, you will have the opportunity to work on challenging projects that contribute to our mission. Internships at Astranis typically last for twelve weeks and are designed for students currently enrolled at a four-year university. This role is hourly and offers a chance to work on meaningful projects, regardless of your seniority.
Key Responsibilities
- Design signal processing for custom software-defined radio hardware, including tasks such as channelization, equalization, PA linearization, gain control, carrier synchronization, symbol mapping, framing, and channel coding/FEC.
- Collaborate closely with FPGA developers to implement and test signal processing on radio hardware.
- Model the end-to-end radio system from earth to space and back.
- Conduct radio architecture trade studies, run link budgets, and optimize the radio system for maximum performance across various markets and use cases worldwide.
Requirements
- Passion for working in a fast-paced environment and a strong desire to learn continuously.
- Strong fundamentals in signals and systems, including basic transforms, filters, aliasing, and analysis in both continuous and discrete domains.
- Solid understanding of digital communications, including modulation, coding, synchronization, fading, Doppler, multiple access, and channel capacity.
- Familiarity with software development, particularly in writing software for DSP, MCU, and/or FPGA, and experience in one or more scripting languages.
- Understanding of analog concepts such as amplifiers, analog filters, gain and delay variation, reflections, and compression.
- Experience working with signal generators, signal analyzers, network analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
- U.S. Citizenship or Green Card is required due to U.S. Government space technology export regulations.
Bonus Skills
- Experience with software-defined radios.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Experience with GNU Radio.
- Experience with FPGA development and/or embedded C.
Compensation
The base pay for this position is $29.00 per hour.
