About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Core Product Team at Substack, you will be at the forefront of developing our core product platform. This role involves working on everything from frontend UI and testing to APIs, low-level services, and database operations. You will collaborate closely with designers, product thinkers, and directly with customers to build new product offerings and tools across the platform.
Responsibilities
- Develop Core Products: With the support of the engineering team, you will develop the core Substack product for both readers and writers. This dynamic role requires you to jump into any area of the product, learn quickly, and add value.
- Engineering Best Practices: Grow and develop engineering best practices through close mentorship and collaboration across a team of engineers.
- Product Collaboration: Contribute to the entire product process in collaboration with designers, writers, support staff, and others. From product concept and research to implementation and deployment, you will own your work and deliver high-quality solutions.
- Customer Interaction: Work directly with customers to solve their problems. The entire company, including the CEO, participates in customer support to build empathy for our users and help us build better products.

- JavaScript: Especially Node/Express and React.
- Database: Postgres.
Requirements
- Experience: 10+ years of experience building backend software for high-scale systems.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Full Stack Contribution: Ability to contribute across the full web stack, with a deeper passion for certain technologies and systems.
