Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack, Front-End Focus)

Job Overview

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with a full stack and front-end focus to join our Software Engineering team. This role involves a variety of tasks, including daily support for content production and publishing, as well as integrating third-party systems into our news products. The successful candidate will coordinate integration, design, and development with other software engineers while enhancing the process for testing and deployment.

Responsibilities

• Lead efforts to build new applications while maintaining and improving existing systems.
• Support Seattle Times technology platforms such as seattletimes.com, internal newsroom tools, reader-facing mobile applications, and various APIs.
• Write code, test, and solve problems to achieve business objectives.
• Define and implement best practices for supporting technology and system requirements.
• Work as part of cross-functional business and product teams.
• Serve as a team resource for functionality solutions, SDLC improvements, and requirement interpretation.
• Contribute to plans for monitoring, infrastructure, and incident response.
• Stay informed about market and technology trends and lead discussions on their relevance to team responsibilities.
• Occasionally work weekends, odd hours, and during emergencies to support continuous operation.
• Work remotely full-time while maintaining effective communication and collaboration with teammates.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience in a related field.
• Experience: Five or more years of web application development experience with expertise in at least one of the programming languages and frameworks used daily (PHP, JavaScript, React).
• Technical Skills: Expertise with React, Node.js, Express, TypeScript, NPM, CSS, Sass, CSS Modules, front-end build tools like Webpack, Grunt, and Babel, WordPress, AWS services such as Lambda, S3, API Gateway, GraphQL, and MongoDB.
• Proven track record of building products from design through delivery.
• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Strong collaborative capabilities and interpersonal communication skills.
• Desire to learn and grow abilities.
• Open to new ideas and methods.
• Diverse development experience with participation in build vs. buy decisions and successful integration and delivery of multi-vendor solutions.
• Experience leading agile processes and tailoring SDLCs and internal standards to organizational needs and maturity.
• Comfortable with unit testing and CI/CD techniques.
• Knowledgeable of and capable of implementing current accessibility best practices.
• Solid understanding of monitoring, reliability, and performance optimization for both client and server-side applications.
• Familiarity with cloud architectures and services.
• Clear ability to mentor others.

Compensation

The full salary range for this position is $104,100 to $147,000 annually. We typically pay between $104,100 and $132,700, depending on experience and qualifications.
