Staff Data Scientist - Operations Research

Job Overview

Join Walmart's E2E Network Strategy and Operational Science - Retail Intelligence team as a Staff Data Scientist. In this role, you will be a core contributor to AI discovery, research, algorithmic solution design, and rapid prototyping of machine learning solutions to enhance the efficiency of Walmart US store and distribution center operations. You will focus on designing machine learning and operations research models in the Associate Engine to optimize workload planning and task prioritization.

Key Responsibilities

• AI and ML Model Design: Develop detailed ML/AI model designs, feature engineering, model development, experimentation, and pilot testing. Refine models iteratively to improve performance.
• Collaboration: Work closely with Product and Tech teams to productionize and scale ML/AI solutions. Establish model monitoring and management processes.
• Algorithm Development: Select and develop ML/AI or Operations Research algorithms at scale, aligned with strategic business goals and operational efficiency.
• Research and Strategy: Apply broad knowledge of ML/AI capabilities to identify growth areas and new opportunities. Conduct research to recommend strategies by evaluating organizational outcomes and trends.
• Team Influence: Lead a team of Data Scientists focused on ML/AI solutions for associate work prioritization and workforce planning.
• Project Management: Execute full project life cycles, including planning, data collection, model prototyping, and deployment. Manage stakeholder communication and cross-functional partnerships.
• MLOps Framework: Adhere to MLOps practices for continuous testing and monitoring of data science algorithms.

Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 3 years in applied machine learning, with familiarity in core supervised and unsupervised algorithms.
• Programming Skills: Proficient in Python and large-scale training using data structures and algorithms.
• Causal Inference: At least 1 year of experience with causal inference frameworks, Bayesian Networks, and Operations Research methods.
• Cloud Environments: Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure and Google Cloud.
• MLOps Practices: Solid understanding of MLOps, including design documentation, unit testing, integration testing, and source code control (git).
• Agile Methodologies: Experience with agile methodologies and project management tools like JIRA.

Education

• Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field with 6 years of experience.
• Option 2: Master’s degree in the aforementioned fields with 4 years of experience.
• Option 3: 8 years of experience in an analytics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Econometrics.
• Experience with open-source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
