About The Browser Company

The Browser Company of New York is a group of friendly humans working to make the internet feel more like home. The web browser is one of the most important tools we use — not just on our computers, but in our lives. The world has changed in the past 15 years, but our web browsers look and behave pretty much the same. We think it’s time to push the web browser forward again, which is why we built Arc — a browser that’s not just faster, but also more personal, focused, creative… and maybe even more fun.

About The Role

Building a web browser is an extraordinary technical and product undertaking. As a Swift Product Engineer on our team, you will solve unique architectural and systems challenges. You'll design sleek and thoughtful solutions to complex problems. And, you'll contribute to the world's next most influential piece of software.

Responsibilities

  • Work with our Design and Membership teams to decide product experiments and adjustments to the browser.
  • Pair-program with designers to prototype and explore new and interesting interaction models.
  • Implement custom native user interfaces in Swift.
  • Optimize UI and application code for performance, quality, and maintainability.
  • Scope, architect, and implement large product initiatives including UI, logic, networking, and persistence components.

Within 1 Month

  • Get onboarded onto the team and codebase with an onboarding buddy.
  • Receive a number of onboarding presentations on how we give each other feedback, the phases a startup goes through, our technical strategy, and more.
  • Get familiar with Chromium, Swift, and our development environment across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.
  • Have shipped a few bug fixes and features across our codebase.
  • Have pair programmed with a large portion of the engineering team.

Within 3 Months

  • Have worked on 5+ projects across the codebase, each with a different set of engineers and designers.
  • Be the point of contact for bugs and product iterations of a few product surface areas.
  • Be involved in product discussions about certain product surface areas.
  • Be involved in weekly engineering discussions about our architecture, how we do code review, code style, and more.
  • Be regularly posting feedback about using the browser in our #dogfooding channel.

Within 6 Months

  • Be interview trained and interviewing candidates for roles at the Browser Company.
  • Be familiar with some C++ and how we interact with the underlying browser engine.
  • Be adjusting our terraform config to deploy new infrastructure or update our build pipelines.
  • Be leading projects from conception to production launch.
  • Be mentoring and pair programming with newer engineers to help them get spun up on the codebase.

Qualifications

  • Experience with product development on iOS/macOS, preferably in Swift.
  • Experience tech leading critical projects or initiatives within your team and organization.
  • Worked on large, complex codebases.
  • Product-minded and user-driven.
  • Pragmatic and can see the bigger picture; able to reason about prioritization and scope.
  • Excited to work in a startup environment with daily stand-ups and quick product validation cycles.
  • Bias to action. We like learning as quickly as possible, so we embrace failing fast to refine our code, systems, and processes rapidly.
  • At least 4 hours of overlap time with team members located in Eastern Time Zone.

Compensation And Benefits

With our flexible compensation model, employees have the ability to choose the cash-to-equity ratio that best suits their individual needs. Every offer we extend includes three options: a salary-optimized offer, an equity-optimized offer, and a balanced offer.

The annual salary range for this role is $225,000-275,000 USD. The actual salary range offered will vary based on experience level and interview performance.

In addition to a competitive salary and equity package, we provide every employee with the following benefits:

  • Comprehensive benefits package with employee medical, dental, and vision. We cover 100% of premiums for employees, 90% for dependents.
  • 401k plan.
  • Flexible vacation policy - on average, our team members take between 15-20 vacation days a year, plus federal holidays (holidays vary by location).
  • Remote-friendly working environment - our core working hours are 11 AM-2 PM Eastern Time.
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
  • $1,500 USD home office stipend.
  • Employees based in the US also receive additional services like free annual memberships to One Medical (where available), Talkspace, Teladoc, and HealthAdvocate.

The Browser Company is a well-funded, ambitious startup of about 85 people (and growing!) who are passionate about building great products. We are a remote-first, distributed team, with the option to work in office in New York. We strongly support diversity and encourage people from all backgrounds to apply.
