About the Role

As a Principal Software Engineer in the Cloud Infrastructure department at Zalando, you will play a crucial role in enhancing, extending, and operating our core cloud infrastructure platform. Your primary focus will be on the Event Streaming platform, which is pivotal for enabling development teams to communicate at scale between services and connect to the central data lake. This platform, built on Apache Kafka and KStreams, offers a fast and efficient solution for many of Zalando’s application developers.

Key Responsibilities

• Software Engineering Excellence: Demonstrate strong software engineering skills and a deep understanding of engineering principles across the software development lifecycle.
• Service Ownership: Take ownership of services from problem formulation and inception to solution design, delivery, and operations.
• Collaboration: Work closely with Product Management and other roles to refine functional requirements and build test cases for development and feature release.
• Technical Leadership: Suggest and drive solutions that simplify the technical architecture of services or address technical debt.
• Mentorship: Support the growth of less experienced engineers and new joiners.
• Operational Excellence: Promote deployment automation, observability, and resilience of platform products.
• Support and Documentation: Assist Zalando developers in effectively using platform services through documentation, support requests, and training.
• Issue Investigation: Investigate issues in software, libraries, and cloud infrastructure.

What We’re Looking For

• Over 5 years of recent industry experience as a Senior Systems or Senior Software Engineer.
• Production-grade knowledge in Java and Go, with excellent general software engineering skills.
• Experience with Kafka and other messaging solutions.
• Familiarity with KStreams, Flink, or Databricks.
• Experience in software and API design, including binary protocols, is a plus.
• Experience with microservices architecture at scale and distributed systems.
• Experience building and operating large-scale applications in production.
• Deep knowledge of relevant AWS services and/or Kubernetes experience is a plus.
