Overview
Join American Express as a Senior Backend Software Engineer in our Digital Banking Payments team, where you will be pivotal in driving the Modern Money Movement initiative. This role is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and offers a hybrid work model.
Role Responsibilities
- Architect, code, and ship software that is essential to our customers’ digital lives.
- Work alongside talented engineers in an open, supportive, inclusive environment.
- Engage in agile development practices and contribute significantly to our architecture and business goals.
- Participate in design and code reviews, refining and estimating upcoming work with your team.
- Build and maintain a platform that is scalable, extensible, and meets stringent SLAs.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java 17+.
- Experience with lightweight microservices frameworks like Vert.x, Quarkus, or Micronaut.
- Strong understanding of event-driven architecture and messaging systems like Kafka.
- Expertise in PostgreSQL or equivalent relational databases.
- Experience in cloud-based architecture and distributed systems.
Ideal Candidate
- Open-minded, willing to learn, and passionate about building great software.
- Experience in FinTech is a massive plus.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to express dissenting opinions constructively.
- Self-directed and capable of working in an ambiguous environment.
