Software Engineer, Games Discovery

About The Role

The New York Times is seeking a talented Software Engineer to join the Discovery+ squad within the Games team. This role is based in our New York City headquarters and offers a hybrid work environment. You will report to the Engineering Manager of the team.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and test entry points across NYT surfaces (web and mobile) to help users discover our games.
• Collaborate with partner teams to help monetize our Games through subscriptions and advertising.
• Work with product, design, data, QA, and project management to identify opportunities to deepen and evolve users’ habits with the product.
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

• Demonstrated understanding of frontend web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web performance, accessibility).
• 2+ years of experience in one or more frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue).
• Experience designing and integrating APIs.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of developing software using modern JavaScript frameworks on both the server and client.
• Familiarity with mobile platforms (Android and iOS).
• Experience keeping end-user satisfaction as a top priority.
• Embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and share insights with others.

About The Team

We are a team of engineers, designers, producers, and product managers that helps users discover our games and embark on the journey of becoming a lifelong subscriber. Your work will include engineering exciting features across desktop and mobile that deepen user habits and relationships with our games.

We build our web applications in TypeScript and Node.js, our APIs in Go, and our frontends in React with accessible, semantic HTML and CSS. We’re hosted almost entirely on Google Cloud Platform and will eventually move to AWS.

Additional Information

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
