About The Role
The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager for our Subscriber Experiences Mission, focusing on the award-winning New York Times News apps. This role is pivotal as these apps are where millions of readers go to understand the events shaping the world. As we continue to prioritize our subscription-first strategy, your leadership will be crucial in delivering a high-quality mobile experience.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of mobile developers responsible for the iOS News app.
- Oversee the building, releasing, and maintaining of the app.
- Collaborate with dependent engineering teams.
- Make architecture decisions, establish technical roadmaps, and provide timeline estimations.
- Work closely with the Mobile Platforms team to implement best practices around core app architecture, development workflow, and coding standards.
- Partner with Product, Design, and Data teams to prioritize and deliver features that drive subscriber growth.
- Manage career development for engineers at various stages of their careers.
- Foster an inclusive and supportive team culture within the App Experience team and the broader NYT engineering organization.
Basic Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience managing a mobile engineering team.
- 4+ years of experience building complex and performant iOS or Android apps.
- Demonstrated understanding of iOS best practices and advocacy for iOS engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with large legacy codebases.
- Advocacy for performance monitoring and observability.
- Experience as a steward of a codebase with multiple engineering contributors.
This role includes limited on-call hours, with a schedule to be determined based on team size and other variables.
