Role Summary
As a Staff Data Engineer at Outschool, you will lead data modeling and system design at the intersection of product and data backends. Your work will involve close collaboration with Analytics Engineering, Product Engineering, and Analytics teams to build a stable and extensible foundation for growth. Key initiatives include developing new mechanisms to connect data and models with live product features, building a unified payments data model, and simplifying data flows among tools and systems.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain key business and product data models for analytical, operational, and customer-facing purposes.
- Build reliable, performant, and accurate data systems and tools to enable business processes and decision-making.
- Develop testing and monitoring tools to ensure data quality and validity.
- Integrate heterogeneous systems, tools, and data sources into an effective and cohesive data platform.
- Share knowledge through collaboration, mentorship, design and code reviews, and documentation.
Desired Experience & Skills
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering or related fields.
- 3+ years of experience in data modeling for reporting (OLAP) and production (OLTP).
- 3+ years of experience in the architecture of data systems.
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one modern scripting or programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Scala, TypeScript).
- Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead projects across team boundaries.
Other Considerations
- Experience in startups, especially during hypergrowth phases.
- Experience with highly sensitive data (e.g., healthtech, K-12).
