Lead Core Strategist

Job Overview

Join bp's Trading & Shipping division as a Lead Core Strategist, where you will play a pivotal role in transforming our analytics capabilities. As part of the Trading Data Analytics team within the Trading Analytics & Insights (TA&I) organization, you will work alongside Quantitative Analytics, Data Strategists, and Core Strategists. Your mission will be to provide new models, tradable insights, and agile technology solutions that empower the analyst community and enhance commercial teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Build Relationships: Develop direct relationships with key analysts and commercial partners to understand their business requirements and goals.
• Technical Leadership: As a seasoned industry practitioner, contribute significantly to the Core Strategist team globally, defining technical excellence and best practices.
• Team Management: Manage a small team of direct reports, providing mentorship and skill development.
• Technical Design Ownership: Act as a technical design owner for specific commodity lines, ensuring solutions meet commercial outcomes while focusing on performance requirements.
• Strategic Technology Advancement: Play a leading role in advancing the strategic technology agenda across regions.
• Problem Solving: Provide day-to-day problem-solving support and drive collaboration and knowledge sharing across Agile Squads worldwide.
• Solution Development: Build efficient, resilient, and innovative solutions using modern data analytics technologies, enabling analysts and driving revenue generation.
• Visualization Solutions: Partner with analysts to develop custom interactive dashboard visualization solutions using web technologies and third-party frameworks.
• Software Development Best Practices: Adhere to best practices for enterprise-grade applications, contributing to shared proprietary model libraries.
• Collaboration with IT: Work with architecture and infrastructure teams to ensure designs align with company technology strategy.

Essential Qualifications

• Education: Relevant university degree in a STEM subject or other quantitative field (e.g., computer science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or physics).
• Experience: Minimum 5 years of industry experience, with substantial experience in Python programming for numerical data analysis.
• Technical Skills: Extensive knowledge of pandas, numpy, Jupyter, SQL, and RDBMs. Experience with cloud technology concepts, specifically AWS services.
• Communication: Fluent in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desirable Experience

• Knowledge of regional energy markets (e.g., oil, natural gas, low-carbon, LNG, or power).
• Understanding of web technologies including HTML, CSS, XML.
• Experience with data science platforms, especially DataIKU or Databricks.
• Quantitative and data science skills, including statistics, probability theory, optimization, or machine learning.
