About the Role

As a Principal Applied Scientist specializing in AI and Machine Learning, you will be at the forefront of developing the next generation of risk management and fraud detection systems for Zalando Payments. You will lead the scientific roadmap, working closely with a team of 10-20 applied scientists across various cross-functional teams. Your role will involve driving research and development initiatives, raising the bar for scientific work and documentation, and co-organizing the applied science guild.

Key Responsibilities

• Synergy and Collaboration: Bring synergies among various ML products within the department, ensuring solutions address key customer problems.
• Leadership and Mentorship: Work closely with team leads, product managers, applied scientists, and engineers to identify opportunities and resource requirements for impactful projects. Mentor and train other Applied Scientists.
• Research and Development: Lead research-related solution designs for high-stakes projects. Develop and deploy machine learning algorithms and pipelines, from data collection to implementation and maintenance.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a direct contact for internal and external stakeholders, including upper management, translating their requirements into actionable R&D initiatives.

Qualifications

• Educational Background: Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar quantitative fields.
• Industry Experience: 5+ years of experience in the industry with a strong command of Python and ML libraries such as PyTorch, pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and big data frameworks like Spark.
• Domain Expertise: Experience within Payments or Fraud detection is desirable.
• Technical Skills: Profound understanding of statistics and machine learning, from simple linear models to neural networks (e.g., LSTM, Transformers).
• Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present ideas clearly and facilitate decision-making.
