Senior Backend Engineer

About the Role

onX is seeking a talented Senior Backend Engineer to join our Backcountry team. This team is responsible for feature development for the onX Backcountry application. We emphasize data-driven decision-making and experimentation, providing engineers with ownership and autonomy to create, develop, and analyze their work in alignment with broader company objectives. Key Responsibilities

• Build scalable services to support new features and products for the onX suite of apps.
• Write unit, integration, and acceptance tests.
• Participate in architectural decisions involving our services.
• Collaborate effectively with other team members and stakeholders.
• Lead by example and embody our company values.
• Leverage and extend existing onX services.
• Participate in an on-call schedule to support backend services after work hours.

What You’ll Bring

• Minimum of eight (8) years of professional software development experience, with at least three (3) years focused on API development.
• Experience building and debugging distributed, scalable microservices architecture.
• Strong foundation in computer science and modern API and systems design.
• Passion for improving your craft and advocating for customer experience.
• Desire to mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other senior engineers.
• Experience with Elixir or other functional programming languages is a plus.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform and relational databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Compensation

• Competitive salary range of €150,000 to €175,000 annually.
• Full-time employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.

Location

This position can be performed remotely from anywhere in the United States, with options to work from onX corporate offices, Basecamps, or Connection Hubs.
