Senior Lead Cloud Engineer (Terraform and Azure)

Job Overview

Northern Trust is seeking a dynamic Senior Lead Cloud Engineer with a focus on automation, networking, and security operations to join our team in Dublin, Ireland. This role is pivotal in our transformation to the cloud, requiring a strong background in cloud automation engineering and security frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud DevOps Engineering & Automation

• Develop infrastructure-as-code (IaC) automation using tools like Terraform to create patterns and modules that accelerate development for end users.
• Utilize modern DevOps and CI/CD tools such as GitHub, GitHub Actions, ADO, and Jenkins to provision infrastructure resources and prevent configuration drift.
• Collaborate with development teams to ensure seamless continuous integration and deployment, promoting disciplined code versioning practices.
• Manage Terraform Cloud for workspace and state management.
• Work with product, architecture, and other stakeholders to ensure cloud technologies align with product roadmaps and well-architected frameworks.
• Investigate and resolve complex cloud infrastructure issues, recommending and developing solutions and documenting reengineering processes.
• Participate in IT Service Management (ITSM) change, incident, and general requests for cloud platform support for business as usual (BAU) operations.
• Contribute to cloud operation disciplines, improving processes such as OS lifecycle management, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, and certificate management.

Network Engineering

• Manage firewall technologies such as Azure Front Door and Akamai WAF/CDN via automation, possessing networking fundamentals to identify root causes of application connectivity issues.
• Support cloud network security platforms and collaborate with tool vendors across WAF/CDN, DNS Management, and load balancing.
• Design, develop, and implement automation workflows for network firewalls to enhance security protocols and integrate firewall management within the broader security strategy.
• Proficient in APIs to construct REST requests and understand HTTP response codes.

Security Engineering

• Develop, implement, and enforce Policy-as-Code (PaC) for cloud environments (Azure, AWS) to configure, detect, remediate, and enforce security standards.
• Define and implement security policies based on CIS/NIST industry benchmarks.
• Support remediation of security vulnerabilities using cloud posture management and ITSM tooling in accordance with service level agreements (SLA).
• Manage, configure, enhance, and operate cloud security posture management platforms for pre-deployment scanning of IaC code to protect infrastructure.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• University or college degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical fields.
• Proven experience in cloud computing (Microsoft Azure, AWS) and cloud networking automation.
• Expertise in Terraform for infrastructure as code automation.
• Experience with Azure networking tools (V-WAN, VNET, BGP, etc.).
• Strong understanding of DevSecOps concepts and experience implementing these in existing frameworks.
• Passion for end-to-end DevOps automation via CI/CD pipelines to deploy Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Proficiency in scripting languages: Python, Perl, Ruby, PowerShell, YAML, KQL.
• Knowledge of waterfall and Agile, Scrum, Kanban, SAFe delivery methodologies.
• Experience in testing automation harnesses and frameworks.
