Job Overview
Join Vapi as a Founding Senior Backend Engineer and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of voice AI technology. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and deploying backend features that enhance our modular API-first architecture. This role requires a deep understanding of real-time low-latency constraints and a passion for building infrastructure that bridges the gap between raw models and production-ready voice AI.
Key Responsibilities
- Feature Ownership: Take full ownership of features from customer requests to deployment. You will be expected to ship a pre-scoped feature within the first 7 days and independently ship a feature within the first 30 days.
- Optimization and Refactoring: Deliver optimizations and refactors to improve system performance. For example, you might improve the latency of a component in the speech-to-speech pipeline or refactor a tool-calling mechanism to enhance determinism.
- Customer Interaction: Engage with customers to understand their needs and deliver solutions. You will receive requests from the support team and ship fixes within the first 14 days, as well as proactively pick up customer threads to investigate and solve issues.
- Delight Customers: Go beyond expectations to delight customers, such as by creating a call analytics endpoint within the first 30 days.
Required Competencies
- Technical Expertise: Proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js or similar backend frameworks.
- Communication Skills: Ability to clearly articulate thoughts and ideas.
- Startup Mindset: Willingness to make sacrifices for uncertain outcomes and contribute new ideas.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in full-stack or backend software engineering, with at least 1 year at a startup or similar environment.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Founding, Senior, Staff, or Principal Engineer.
- Not directly from FAANG companies.
- Ability to provide references from at least two colleagues.
