About the Role

As a Senior Systems Development Engineer, you will be part of a team that balances the day-to-day operations of AWS’ software systems with long-term software engineering projects aimed at reducing operational toil. You will spend approximately 50% of your time operating production systems and the other 50% making long-term improvements to the reliability, availability, and performance of those systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and troubleshoot reliable, scalable software systems.
• Develop and implement solutions to improve system reliability and performance.
• Collaborate with team members to design solutions for common operational problems.
• Engage in root cause analysis and implement fixes for software bugs.
• Work on infrastructure as code (IaC) to update and optimize system configurations.
• Develop software to enhance system performance and reduce carbon emissions.

About the Team

AWS Managed Operations was founded in April 2023 with the goal of reducing operational load through long-term engineering projects. The team is responsible for the day-to-day operations of AWS Regions, focusing on improving availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software development or a related field.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, TypeScript, Python, or Ruby.
• Experience operating and troubleshooting reliable, scalable software systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot at all levels, from network to operating systems to software applications.
• Legal right to work in Germany.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications.
• Experience leading strategic team efforts.
• Experience mentoring other engineers.
• Strong understanding of network fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, load balancing).
• Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible).
• Experience scripting operating system tasks in Bash, Python, etc.
