Principal Systems Development Engineer, Managed Operations

Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a highly motivated Principal Systems Development Engineer to join the Managed Operations (MO) organization. This role is pivotal in driving technical operational efficiency across Amazon, focusing on improving the reliability, performance, and efficiency of AWS's cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Balance hands-on technical work with strategic direction to improve the reliability and performance of AWS's cloud services.
Problem Solving: Tackle complex problems, often requiring innovative solutions beyond conventional approaches.
Collaboration: Work closely with various departments within Amazon to drive improvements in operational efficiency.
Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest technologies and methodologies to enhance AWS's cloud services.
On-Call Rotation: Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure the reliability and availability of AWS services.

A Day in the Life

Monday: Provide feedback on critical changes and guide senior technical talent.
Tuesday: Identify reliability risks and design cohesive solutions.
Wednesday: Lead design reviews with technical leaders.
Thursday: Influence senior management to make strategic investments.
Friday: Develop systems to enhance overall system reliability.

Basic Qualifications

10+ years of experience in software development or a related field.
Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, TypeScript, Python, or Ruby.
Experience in operating and troubleshooting reliable, scalable software systems.
Strong communication skills across languages, cultures, and time zones.
Legal right to work in Ireland.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications.
Ability to lead strategic efforts across multiple teams.
Experience in mentoring engineers and managers.
Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools like CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible.
Experience with monitoring frameworks such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana.
