Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Managed Operations team in Berlin, Germany. This role is pivotal in the launch and operation of the European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), a significant development in AWS's utility computing offerings. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will lead operations and development teams to deliver high-availability AWS services such as EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Launch and Operations: Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, working closely with global AWS teams to influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
• Collaboration: Work with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations, ensuring improvements in availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
• On-call Support: Participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents occurring out-of-hours, ensuring system resilience and fault tolerance.
• System Performance: Review operational health of services, identify anomalies, and craft actionable bug reports to enhance system efficiency and performance.
• Mentorship: Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Qualifications

• Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of systems engineering experience with hardware, software, networking, and operating systems.
  • Proficient in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Ruby.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and anticipating problems affecting software systems' performance, reliability, or availability.

• Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working cross-organizationally and leading strategic team efforts.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.
  • Experience in performance tuning software applications and optimizing fleet utilization.
