About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Streams Team at Datadog, you will play a critical role in operating and scaling our Kafka fleet, which is essential for sending data in near real-time across our services. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, cost efficiency, and usability of our Kafka infrastructure, which supports dozens of internal customers and handles petabytes of storage and hundreds of millions of messages per second.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate a bleeding edge Kafka deployment: Ensure exceptional reliability by understanding foundational hardware and cloud-provider building blocks, incident root causes, and performance profiles through detailed investigations.
• Develop a high-performance streaming platform: Create a platform composed of control and data planes to ease customer adoption and reduce operational burden.
• Integrate open source solutions: Work with internal systems to operate Kafka efficiently.
• Optimize Kafka client behavior: Tweak low-level client behavior to enhance high-throughput application performance.
• Drive complex projects: Be accountable for timely delivery and high-quality results.
• Mentor junior team members and interns: Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members.

Who You Are

• Independent and experimental: You can operate independently, methodically experiment, and rapidly iterate without fear of failure.
• Strong communicator: You possess good communication skills and have experience gathering requirements from stakeholders and leading complex technical initiatives.
• Willing to learn: You are open to learning new languages and technologies, diving deep into runtimes and ecosystems.
• Experienced in Java or Golang: You have experience delivering software solutions and libraries in Java or Golang.
• Familiar with large scale systems: You have experience building or operating large scale stateful systems and are familiar with distributed systems concepts such as consensus, quorums, and replication.

Bonus Points

• Experience with large-scale streaming systems: Direct experience operating or using systems like Kafka.
• Familiarity with C++ or Rust: Knowledge of these languages is a plus.
