Whatnot is a livestream shopping platform and marketplace backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, and CapitalG. We’re building the future of ecommerce, bringing together community, shopping, and entertainment. As a remote-first team, we operate out of hubs within the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Germany.
💻 The Role
As a Discovery Engineer at Whatnot, you will be responsible for building the best user experience for finding and engaging with the most relevant content on our platform: streams, products, and others in the community. You will focus on a wide variety of problems including taxonomy, browse experience, search and recommendations algorithms, and content understanding. We make data-informed decisions and ship quickly to benefit our users.
👋 About You
- 4+ years of software engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Knowledge of at least 3 languages (we primarily use Python, Elixir, JavaScript, and are open to others).
- Excellent product instincts; you prioritize users over technical solutions.
- Known for shipping products and features quickly.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and independence in decision-making.
- Comfortable working across the stack (backend and frontend).
- Ability to pick up new technologies quickly.
- Proven track record of delivering features.
- Experience in product management, AWS, and DevOps.
- Startup experience at a high-growth company is a plus.
💰 Compensation
For US-based applicants: $185,000 - $245,000/year + benefits + stock options. The salary range may be inclusive of several levels that would be applicable to the position. Final salary will be based on a number of factors including level, relevant prior experience, skills, and expertise.
