Role Overview
As a Senior Backend Engineer in the Discovery team at Whatnot, you will be pivotal in crafting the best user experience for finding and engaging with the most relevant content on our platform, including streams, products, and community interactions. Your main responsibilities will include developing and maintaining scalable taxonomy, browse experience, search and recommendations algorithms, and content understanding systems. You will make data-informed decisions and ship quickly to benefit our users.
Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable and maintainable backend systems.
- Develop taxonomy and content management systems applicable to new product features and recommendation algorithms.
- Prototype new ideas quickly and build them for extreme scale while coordinating closely with other teams.
- Mentor team members and prioritize building inclusive, supportive teams.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of full-time software engineering experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Expertise in designing backend systems.
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages; knowledge of Python, Elixir, JavaScript is a plus.
- Strong product instincts, focusing on user needs before technical solutions.
- Proven track record of shipping products and features quickly.
- Experience in taxonomy, category graph systems, or machine learning fields is a plus.
