Role Overview
As a Senior Backend Engineer in the Discovery team at Whatnot, you will be pivotal in crafting the best user experience for finding and engaging with the most relevant content on our platform. This includes streams, products, and community interactions. Your main responsibilities will involve developing and maintaining a healthy ecosystem where both buyers and sellers can thrive.
Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable taxonomy and content management systems.
- Apply your systems to new product features and recommendation algorithms.
- Make data-informed decisions and ship quickly to benefit our users.
- Coordinate closely with other teams to build for extreme scale.
- Prototype new ideas quickly, then build them for scalability.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of full-time software engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Expertise in designing and building maintainable backend systems.
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages; knowledge of Python, Elixir, JavaScript is a plus.
- Strong product instincts, focusing on user needs before technical solutions.
- Known for shipping products and features rapidly.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and autonomy in decision-making.
- Experience in taxonomy, category graph systems, or machine learning fields like Recommendations, Content Understanding, and Search is a plus.
